We're looking for a senior engineer experienced with the full web stack—someone who has owned production apps for many years, and loves solving user-facing product problems. As a senior engineer at Mystery Science you’ll work on all areas of the app, from front-end changes that millions of children will see, to scaling issues, to internal tools that automate our business. Engineers have a seat at the table for all decisions in the company. You’ll work alongside a strong engineering team that obsesses over customer feedback and is constantly iterating to improve based on what we hear. We release multiple updates to our website every day and implement new features days after conceiving of them. Our current stack is postgres-heroku-rails-backbone.

This is an opportunity to help fix science education for the next generation. Mystery Science has created the fastest growing science curriculum in the U.S. We’re already used by teachers in more than 10% of elementary schools in the country. We have an early product with lots of future plans, but our sales have already taken off. In an industry that is historically plagued by long sales cycle and high barriers to entry, we’ve sold thousands schools without a single sales person on staff. We’re backed by a great group of investors including Y Combinator, Learn Capital, and Reach Capital.

If you’re looking for the basics:

$4M in funding from leading education investors (and we’re already profitable)
    Competitive salary
    Equity in a high-growth company
    401K, health care, vacation
    Customers who love us
…but the real perks of working at Mystery Science are the quality of the people on your team and the problem we’re solving. Those things are what bring us to work every day.

On your first day at Mystery Science, you’ll meet 20 people who are passionate about science, children, and education, and who each love their respective crafts. You can meet our team here: http://mysteryscience.com/team.

We’re answering every question children ask about the world. Every child starts out fascinated by the world around them, but by middle school too many have lost this curiosity. Mystery Science helps children to stay curious. Our first product is a tool for teachers to use in the classroom. It contains a full curriculum that makes it easy for elementary teachers to re-create scientific discoveries rather than teaching dry vocabulary science. Through teachers we’re collecting every question children ask about the world and will create explanations for every question. Our second product is a visual Wikipedia for kids, enabling children to explore every question they have.

We’re on a mission to change the culture and create the next generation of problem solvers. We’re working on the most important infrastructure problem in the world today: our ability to pass on knowledge to the next generation. Richard Feynman explains the problem well. To paraphrase him: our modern lives are made possible by our knowledge of science and technology, yet remarkably few people have a scientific perspective on the world. At Mystery Science, we have developed a unique way to pass on this knowledge to the next generation and to do it at scale. The foundation of everything we do is a technology platform that enables us to create content at incredible speeds, automate and streamline internal business operations, and organize a massive set of knowledge about the world.

What we’re looking for in you:

You love working in and have deep experience with the full web stack. From cross-browser CSS fixes to database tuning, you’re comfortable up and down the stack.
You’re part engineer & product thinker. We know the best ideas come from a deep understanding of both domains.
You’re located in the Bay Area or willing to relocate (we’re in San Francisco).
You’re uniquely excited by the problem we’re solving.
If this is you, let’s talk.
