In 2010, Drs. Coby and Janet Lund began working with Chris Kooken, a software engineer, to create an electronic data collection and management system that would allow practitioners to gather a variety of data on a mobile device; then access that data online for analysis and reporting. At the time, their clinical practice was growing, and the paper data collection and management was becoming too cumbersome. It was expensive, difficult to access and manage, unwieldy to create and manipulate graphs, and there was virtually no security.
The Lunds met developer Chris Kooken at a fundraiser for an ABA school in Atlanta, and together began working on Catalyst. The system was designed to collect a wide variety of both skill acquisition and behavior reduction data. Over time, the development team fashioned the user experience of the system to replicate the manner in which practitioners interacted with traditional data collection systems.
Since those early days, the team has grown dramatically, as features are refined, expanded, and created. Now, there are more than 500 organizations in over 15 countries taking advantage of Catalyst—saving time and money on data collection and management; increasing practitioners’ abilities to collect, access, use, and analyze data; while also increasing the security of the clients’ confidential information.
Now, with an Atlanta team of 50, including senior software engineers and BCBA-Ds, Catalyst is the clear industry flagship for electronic data collection and management, and DataFinch is positioned to continue its relentless drive to keep Catalyst at the cutting edge of technology and Applied Behavior Analysis.
