After meeting at Bar Camp LA, Greg and Will learned they lived about 5 minutes walking distance from each other. After a few months of late-night scheming, they had come up with a prototype of a app that facilitated connecting people by phone. One of the features of the app was called "Burner," which allowed users to create a temporary phone number that could be posted to twitter for holding impromptu office hours. As they started showing the app around, they quickly became more excited about the Burner feature as it's own product, and convinced that phone numbers, in the smart phone world, were rife for innovation. A prototype they debuted at SXSW in March 2012 earned accolades from attendees.

Burner was launched in 2012 and soon raised a small round of angel financing. As the product continued to evolve and grow, it became clear there was a large problem to be solved around mobile identity and privacy, and that Burner was uniquely positioned to attack it. Burner raised 2 million in seed financing in late 2013.
