Hired Partner, Techqueria: Empowering Latinx Professionals to Succeed in Tech

Techqueria is a nonprofit organization that serves the largest global community of Latinx professionals in tech with 15,000+ members and allies. We sat down with Community Marketing Director, Jasmin Gonzalez.

Let’s kick this off with an introduction!

Hola! My name is Jasmin Gonzalez and I currently serve as the Community Marketing Director for Techqueria. Our mission is to empower Latinx professionals with the resources and support that they need to thrive and become leaders in the tech industry.

When did Techqueria first get started?

Techqueria was founded in Berkeley back in November 2015 with the purpose of serving those who were studying or pursuing a career in tech. In March of 2019 we incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization and now maintain a bustling online community using Slack where over 10,000+ members engage daily.

Techqueria works with both tech companies and employee resource groups (ERGs) to build Latinx-centered spaces that revolve around career advice, recruiting, mentorship and networking in order to comprehensively affect change in the tech industry.

Tell us more about your organization’s partnership with Hired.

Our partnership with Hired began in early 2020 with initial goals of recruitment support as well as a focus on sharing career advice with our members. Over the pandemic months, we’ve been able to leverage the industry knowledge that Hired has to enable our members to navigate the tech industry with ease! Hired participates in our monthly career fair which we co-host with Blacks in Technology and you’ll find that we often provide insights in Hired’s content, such as the How Remote Work Can Accelerate Diversity and Inclusion Efforts ebook.

Is Techqueria and Hired working on anything particular right now?

Members of Techqueria – or Techquerxs as we call them – have a direct connection to the Hired team using a dedicated channel (#careers-hired) within our Slack. With this additional support, the community is able to interact with the Hired team in a low-risk and swift fashion! We know that networking is key to making it in the industry and with this opportunity our members have a leg up.

Earlier this year, we were also able to host a technical interview workshop with Exponent thanks to the Hired team! As a growing organization we’re fortunate to have a corporate ally like Hired, who has shown time and time again that they are dedicated to DEI and creating inclusive hiring practices within the tech industry.

As our partnership continues we look forward to future initiatives and are on the edge of our seats awaiting the next resources that the team publishes… I highly suggest that other organizations and companies in the industry review their inventory which covers wage inequality, pregnancy discrimination, and more!

Thank you for sharing all of that! Anything upcoming events you’d like to inform our audience about?

We are currently gearing up for our annual Latinx Heritage Month (LHM) Summit which will be held on October 6-8th this fall! Our LHM Summit was created to empower Latinx professionals in tech, connect them with companies who are committed to inclusion and to celebrate the thriving Latinx in tech community. We are currently accepting submissions for moderators, speakers, and workshop leads!

Additionally, we have different events every week so be sure to check those out on our site if you’d like to learn more. We encourage new and interested members to attend our monthly New Member Mixers held on first Fridays to become acclimated with all that we offer and join our comunidad.
